On December 14, 2015, the commercial building fire detection system in the Main Terminal of Bellingham International Airport was activated. An Airport

Operations Specialist was in the building at the time of the activation, and they ensured that all patrons and employees were evacuated from the building immediately. Upon successful evacuation, staff began to investigate what had triggered the alarm. The fire alarm panel was showing alarms in areas encompassing the center entrance, the basement, and the TSA oversize bag screening area.

The entrance, the TSA oversize bag screening area, and the baggage storage office were all checked for possible alarm activation source but no evidence of smoke or fire were detected. The basement was not able to
be checked, as airport operations personnel did not have access.

Upon further investigation in the terminal, it was noted a large cloud of smoke was present in baggage claim along the north wall. The wall outlet
between the electrical room doors and the unoccupied baggage service office caught fire when an employee plugged in a floor buffing machine.

Review of this video revealed that a large fireball, approximately six feet by four feet in size, erupted from the outlet. The employee immediately unplugged the machine and the fire self-extinguished.
